One vehicle accident
According to authorities, it was unclear exactly what happened and why the SUV flipped over. Apparently there was only one vehicle involved and the driver of the SUV was not cut off by another driver. The incident happened on the westbound Eisenhower at about 1:15 p.m.
According to emergency responders nine of the 12 children were injured seriously. Three of the children were in fair condition at a local hospital. The two adults were also listed in serious condition.
The injured were taken to the Children’s Memorial Hospital, the John G. Stroger Hospital of Cook County and Mount Sinai Hosppital. As of this afternoon there were no official reports of how many of the victims were taken to each hospital.
The accident tied up traffic for several hours. At 1:50 p.m., the highway was still closed and emergency vehicles were still reported headed toward the accident site. The injured were also still at the scene, at that time, being attended by emergency workers.
