Animated movie "Rango" wins weekend box office

Johnny Depp’s voice provides the voice of the main character about a lizard who is mistaken for a western sheriff in the movie that won the weekend box office, "Rango."

The movie, directed by Gore Verbinski, the director of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies earned $38 million dollars to win the number one slot for the weekend. That is just a bit less of the animated film "How to Train Your Dragon" which had its debut last March and earned $43.7 million. "Rango," however, did not have the extra 3D charges that that movie had.

According to media reports, the general audience view of the movie has run contrary to the positive reviews it garnered from critics. The average audience review gave the movie a C+.

In second place was the Matt Damon vehicle based on a Philip K. Dick story called "The Adjustment Bureau." That movie earned $20.9 million and was Damon’s best opening since the 2007 actioner "The Bourne Ultimatum."

In third place was the remake of the fairy tale "The Beauty and the Beast" starring the "High School Musical" starlet, Vanessa Hudgens, "Beastly." However, although it was good enough to earn third place for the weekend the movie earned a rather anemic $10.1 million. The movie was marketed almost exclusively for teen girls, most of which graded the movie a B+.

Also opening this weekend was the comedy "Take Me Home Tonight." The movie was actually filmed in 2007 and sat on shelves until this past weekend. It earned horrible reviews and a sad $3.5 million to finish out of the top ten in 11th place.
