Cate Blanchett joins cast of "The Hobbit"

The Australian actress Cate Blanchett announced that she would, once again, play the character of Galadriel in the live-action adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. It is the same character she played in the first Lord of the Rings movie.

Although it seems relatively innocuous, the fact that the actress will be returning in the role is a bit of a surprise to Hollywood insiders and fans of the book. The problem is that the character of Galadriel is not actually in The Hobbit. Some Hollywood insiders have pointed out, however, that there are virtually no female characters in Tolkien’s novel, so director Peter Jackson may just be looking for ways to balance things out.

Novel takes place before LOTR

The novel The Hobbit takes place before the action in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It tells the story of Bilbo Baggins, a lowly hobbit who goes on the adventure of a lifetime. There are some characters that make appearances in both books, such as Galdalf the wizard and Gollum. Also, the story talks about how Bilbo comes to possess the ring that is the focus of the action in the trilogy.

Peter Jackson recently announced that he would be returning to the director’s chair for the movie. It had been his intent to let someone else direct the film. However, studio troubles caused delays that caused the directors tied with the movie to back out. Jackson decided it was time to step in.

Recently Jackson gave a list of actors for the various roles in the film, and many of them are lesser-known actors. The one actor from the trilogy that seems conspicuously absent is Sir Ian McKellan, who played Gandalf in the trilogy. However, McKellan recently announced on his website that he would be returning in the role.
