Ron Santo first gained fame and became beloved by fans of the north side national league team when he was a player. He was known for kicking his heels in the air before games and became a legendary third baseman. Despite being beloved by Cubs fans, he was denied entry into the Baseball Hall of Fame 19 times.
Suffered from diabetes
Santo was also known for conquering the fact that he suffered from diabetes to achieve his success. He had to overcome several injuries and surgeries due to the disease. He had even had both legs amputated because of the disease, but he continued to broadcast from the Cubs booth using prosthetic legs.
According to information from Santo’s friends and family he actually went into a coma on Wednesday of this week. He died Thursday night in Arizona, where he lived.
The city of Chicago was still waking when the news came about. Already accolades, memories and praise for the Chicago legend had been pouring into local news outlets. Statements from the Cubs and Major League Baseball are expected later today. Funeral arrangements and memorial arrangements have not been announced, as of yet.
