A huge pile up on the Indiana Toll Road, near Chicago, involving a collision with a van full of people closed the road and left at least 7 dead with more injured.

The incident happened at the 103 mile marker near Elkhart County. The accident closed both lanes of the Indiana Toll Road, also known as Interstate 80/90. The accident involved a van filled with people and a tractor trailer which collided with it.

According to media reports, the van hit a deer. When the van slammed to a stop, the tractor trailer behind it collided with the rear end of the van. What followed was a mass of twisted wreckage and bodies. The end result was that seven people were declared dead at the scene, with at least four known to be injured. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals. As of this morning, their conditions were not known.

It took hours for the emergency officials to open the toll way. Since then, the road has been re-opened and traffic was reported as moving steadily again this morning.

For a time traffic was being re-routed. Traffic headed east was detoured at Bristol. Traffic that was headed west was detoured at Middlebury.
