Discovery Channel’s Shark Week ratings numbers are in

The annual week of television shows devoted exclusively to sharks has become a popular thing for cable’s Discovery Channel and in 2011 the week of special programming has been a success for the channel again.

This year the Discovery Channel called in a little bit of help from Saturday Night Live alumni Adam Samberg, to host the week of shows. Once again, all week long, there was nothing but television shows dedicated to sharks swimming around hosts of other Discovery Channel shows and more shows with Great White sharks jumping out of the water. It seems that the public’s thirst for these shows has not waned.

In fact, according to industry reports, the ratings for 2011’s Shark Week got off to a great start on Sunday with some of the best ratings for the Discovery Channel this year. The week opened with 3.3 million viewers the first night. Those are impressive numbers for a basic cable channel, although the numbers were just slightly down from Shark Week in 2010.

Most impressive, according to the Discover Channel, was the large number of female viewers who tuned into see “Great White Invasion” and “Jaws Comes Home.” In prior years, women have not been strong viewers for the week of shark documentaries.

2011 is the 24th year that the Discovery Channel has taken a week of its programming and dedicated it solely to documentaries about sharks. The numbers, even being down slightly, are still going strong for the channel, with no end in sight for the programming.
