Reports are that the star died of natural causes, but no definitive determination has been made, at this point. Authorities in Los Angeles say that an autopsy will be performed to determine what caused his dead. Police did indicate that there appeared to be no signs of foul play.
According to media reports, Smith was found dead at his Baldwin Hills home on Wednesday afternoon. He was discovered by his caretaker.
Authorities told the media that the autopsy will be conducted later this week. However, the coroner did not indicate exactly when that would happen. Performing autopsies when a body is found and a doctor is not present to sign a death certificate is standard operating procedure and not necessarily and indication that anything had gone wrong.
Smith was a towering man who stood 6-foot-7. He played in the NFL for the Baltimore Colts, Oakland Raiders and the Houston Oilers. Prior to that he was a star college athlete. He played for Michigan State University. He even played in a historic game in 1966 against Notre Dame that many have labelled "The Game of the Century."
Once he was done with playing football Smith managed to parlay his fame on the field to fame in movies and television. He was in the Police Academy movies as well as a noted pitchman for several products, including Miller Lite.
