Killer of Riley Fox avoids death penalty and gets life

Scott Eby was already a convicted sex offender when he was released from prison and, ultimately, murdered little Riley Fox, a girl from Wilmington, Illinois. Today, Eby faced a judge and received his sentence after being convicted of the crime. Although he faced a possible death sentence, Eby will instead spend the rest of his life in prison.

According to authorities Eby actually negotiated a plea deal to avoid Illinois’ execution chamber. The plea was accepted by judge Richard Schoenstedt on Tuesday. Eby will spend his life behind bars for the rape and murder of Riley Fox. The entire case, including the sentencing, has taken six years.

Girl taken while sleeping

The murder happened six years ago when little Riley was taken from her bedroom while she slept. Eventually her body was found in a nearby creek. Investigators found a pair of shoes with Eby’s name written on them not far from the body.

There were other suspects however, including Riley Fox’s father, Kevin. In fact, Kevin spent eight months in jail when, for a time, he was considered a suspect. Both Kevin and Melissa Fox had the chance to address Eby in court.

Eventually DNA evidence was able to clear Kevin of the murder. Will County authorities eventually released a statement that they had “dropped the ball” in the investigation into Riley’s death.

Eby himself was reportedly fighting back tears as Melissa Fox lashed out at him. She reportedly stared him in the eyes and said to Eby, “It disgusts me that Riley is gone and you are here.”

Eby apologized to the Fox family during his time to speak. He said he wished he could trade his life for Riley’s.
