Lawn service worker shot and killed while mowing lawn in NW Indiana

Police from northwest Indiana, near Chicago, are asking the public for information that could lead to a suspect in a fatal shooting of a lawn service worker on Saturday afternoon.

The man, Michael Pasternak, Jr., worked for a Crown Point lawn service company. He was working on Saturday, mowing a lawn, when he was shot by an unknown assailant. The shooting took place on the 100 block of Park Place in Hebron.

According to media reports, some witnesses who have come forward told police that they heard five or six shots at the time. The thing that worries the police is that they are stating that the shots came from a nearby wooded area. The shooting, and reports from witnesses who contacted police, took place at about 4:10 p.m.

The man was alive when the paramedics arrived. If the victim was able to speak to police and describe anything, the police have been unwilling to release that information. The man was taken to a nearby hospital and he was later pronounced dead.

Pasternak was originally taken to Porter Hospital in nearby Valparaiso, Indiana. At that point, he was air-lifted to a hospital in Indianapolis for further treatment. It was there that he passed away.

The Indiana State Police are now asking the public to contact them if they have any information. No information about any suspect was given. However, anyone who may have seen or heard anything are encouraged to contact authorities. The Indiana State Police can be contacted at (219) 696-6242.
