The announcement came from both George Lucas’ film company along with Twentieth Century Fox film studios. The first movie to be released in 3D will be the first story in the saga “The Phantom Menace.” That movie will be released in 2012.
Original "Star Wars" were not in 3D format
The movies, of course, was not originally filmed in 3D. Lucasfilms, Ltd., will be retro-fitting them for 3D. This technique has garnered some serious criticism from critics and film fans, but those at Industrial Light & Magic, Lucas’ special effects production company, they are getting good results so far.
The original film, “Star Wars,” came out in 1977. The first three movies released were actually chapters four, five and six. They told the story of Luke Skywalker and his journey to become a mystical Jedi Knight. They became a film milestone for generations. Lucas then returned starting in 1999 with three prequels. They were “The Phantom Menace,” “Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith.”
The prequels garnered mixed to harsh reviews from fans of the first three movies. However, all of the films earned huge money and created box office records.
The films will be released in their 3D version in chapter order rather than in order of their release. Therefore, the three prequels will be released first and then the three original films. Before releasing the three prequels Lucas re-released his three original films by adding new scenes and enhancing some scenes using computer-generated effects.
