The Secret Service is now reportedly involved because, during the time when the man was threatening to jump, he made threats against President Obama. The incident happened at the Kluczynski Federal Building in downtown Chicago, on the 35th floor on Friday afternoon, around 3 p.m.
According to media reports, the man forced his way into Kirk’s offices. He then made his way to an exterior window and broke that. He then threatened to jump, holding officers and office staff at bay for some time.
Kirk’s staff called the authorities. Federal Protective Services then arrived and detained the man, who was not injured in the incident.
Kirk was not in his office at the time. A statement released by his staff said that Kirk was on a naval duty during the time. No further comments were made by Kirk about the man or the incident. It was also not clear if the man hurled any threats against Kirk himself.
So far, the identity of the man has not been released. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in downtown Chicago to undergo observation and a psychiatric evaluation. He is now under protective custody by federal agents.
Kirks is a Republican senator from the state of Illinois and he represents the 10th Congressional District. He won his seat in a contentious race just last year.
