John Mayer and Taylor Swift dated when Swift was just 19-years-old. The two apparently did not date for very long and the relationship ended badly. How badly? So badly that John Mayer now says that Swift’s song "Dear John" is about him and, he claims, it was humiliating to hear that song and he feels that the young country star is being unfair.
According to media reports, the story of the song came out in a recent Rolling Stone interview. In the interview Mayer says he was still reeling from the backlash over an interview he gave to Playboy magazine where he made sexually explicit comments about his exes Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Anniston. The backlash against Mayer was fierce at the time with accusations that he was a misogynist and even racist. It was during this time that his relationship with Swift came to the forefront when she released her album containing the song.
In the interview Mayer is quoted as saying, "I’m pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do. I never got an email. I never got a phone call. I was really caught off guard, and it really humiliated me at a time when I’d already been dressed down. I mean, how would you feel if, at the lowest you’ve ever been, someone kicked you even lower?"
The song “Dear John” was released on Swift’s platinum-selling album "Speak Now." In it, she criticizes someone named John for messing with her heart at an age that was far too young. She also makes claims that she is much more successful than Mayer.
As for Mayer, this has been a rough time for him in recent years. He had a problem with his throat that led to treatment that he thought had fixed the problem. He then released his new album "Born and Raised" which has garnered radio play and decent reviews. He was set to go out on tour to support the album when the throat problem re-emerged, forcing him to cancel his tour. He is expected to undergo surgery that he hopes will finally correct the problem later this year.
Swift, meanwhile, has never publicly confirmed or stated who the song was actually about. She hinted that fans and those who knew about her personal life would be able to tell, but has never publicly stated that the song was about Mayer.
In addition to saying that the song humiliated him, Mayer also offered harsh criticism of Swift’s songwriting abilities. He called the song "cheap" songwriting.
Swift has made no public mention of the article or of anything that Mayer said at this point.
