Teen boys found alive after 50 days adrift at sea

It is a Thanksgiving Day miracle for three teenage boys who had been missing at sea in a tiny aluminum boat since October. The three young men are from the Tokelau Islands not far from new Zealand. The fact they were found is also a miracle.

The three boys, aged 15 and 14, went missing after a sporting competition in October. They were last seen on October 5. They were presumed dead and their small island community even held a memorial service for them.

A miracle of chance

The boys, Samuel Perez and Filo Filo, 15, and Edward Nasau, 14, survived by rationing very meager supplies. They rationed and shared a single raw seagull. They also drank a small amount of rainwater captured in their boat. They finally, out of desperation, drank small amounts of seawater.

Their tale of survival finally ended on Wednesday. Despite being searched for by the New Zealand Airforce and other groups, they were found by a tuna boat that had drifted far from its normal fishing grounds. The boat, the San Nikunau, happened to see their small aluminum boat floating in open waters.

The first mate of the boat told the press that they boys are in remarkably good spirits. They were badly sunburned, since their boat was open and they were exposed to the sun throughout the day in the bright tropic sunlight. They were rushed to a local hospital and their families notified, and they are expected to make a full recovery.

Their boat was found 807 miles from where they had started.
