Top White House advisor to President Obama, David Axelrod, has announced that he will be leaving sometime “well into 2011” and returning to his home town of Chicago, Illinois. Axelrod has been described as the “main architect” of Obama’s election victory in 2008. He announced in a statement on Thursday that he will be returning to Chicago to start work on Obama’s 2010 re-election campaign.

Axelrod has often referred to himself as a “Chicagoan on assignment” during his tenure at the White House. His family, including his wife, still reside in the Midwestern city. He has not given an exact date for when he will be leaving, indicating only that it will be sometime in 2011 and that he misses his home town very much.

Axelrod’s role in the White House is rather sweeping. He is the manager of the president’s speechwriting team. He assists the president in shaping what messages he relays to the public. He also provides advice and coaching on political strategy and offers advice on policy decisions. Others, such as author Bob Woodward, have been more direct in stating that Axelrod is a “spin doctor” and simply “spins” messages to make the president look better.

His primary duty has been as a campaign strategist. As such, he has stated several times that he would leave before the first four-year term was over for President Obama to help advise on strategy for the president’s re-election campaign.
