The brother of State Senator Antonio Munoz was struck by a car during a hit-and-run incident outside a south side Chicago polling place earlier today. Martin Munoz is in a local hospital being treated, but is expected to survive. Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident, but the two did attempt to flee the scene.

Munoz was near Archer Avenue and crossing the street at about 5:30 a.m. while workers at the polling place were setting up for the day’s election activity. Just as he was crossing the street a car ran him down and then attempted to speed off. The car ran several red lights and dodged in and out of traffic in an attempt to get away.

Victim undergoing surgery

According to authorities Munoz was undergoing surgery for some serious leg injuries suffered in the incident. According to witnesses he was sent up into the air when the vehicle hit and the landed on top of the car just before it sped away. The car was reported as a 1994 or 1995 Nissan.

An alert employee at the polling place ran to see if Munoz was all right. He also was able to take down the license plate of the speeding car. This information was turned over to the police and, reportedly, the police have made an arrest of two men.

According to medical staff at Mount Sinai Hospital Munoz is in guarded condition.
