Cops are hoping that two witnesses who chased after a man accused of assaulting a woman can help them find the suspect, along with a dropped cell phone.

The incident happened in the Logan Square area of Chicago. The 37-year-old woman was walking home along the 2900 block of West Belden Avenue when the attack took place. She was reportedly pushed into a gangway at gunpoint. From that point forward the attacker sexually assaulted her.

According to local media reports, the woman was able to scream for help. The screams got the attention of two passers by who ran toward the screams. According to Chicago police the two men then chased after the accused rapist. He then turned the gun on them, holding them at bay for a time, and was able to sneak away into the night.

Chicago police say that the victim’s cell phone, dropped at the scene, might contain the attacker’s fingerprints. That, plus the descriptions of the witnesses, are what the police are hoping will lead them right to the accused.

The police have now issued a community alert about the attacker and the incident. At the same time the police also praised the efforts of the two witnesses who chased after the attacker.

The description of the attacker was that he was Hispanic and somewhere between the ages of 17 and 20. He reportedly stands about five feet, seven inches tall and his estimated weight is 185. His complexion was also described as dark and he had a faded haircut and shrugged shoulders. At the time of the attack he was wearing a checkered shirt and tan cargo shorts.

If anyone else witnessed the attack or thinks that they might know who the attacker was is encouraged to contact the Chicago police department.
