Spears debuted her brand new music video to 'Hold it Against Me' on Thursday night and the reaction has taken the pop industry by storm. The video was the latest demonstration by Spears that she can grab a hold of the pop world but the question on everyone's mind is whether or not she will be able to reclaim the title of pop queen in 2011.
Lady Gaga is known for her iconic and outlandish attire for performances and public appearances almost as much as she is for her award winning pop music. Nobody has taken the pop world by storm the way Lady Gaga has, except for Justin Bieber perhaps, and there is no sign of slowing down the current queen of pop. Lady Gaga recently released her own hit single, 'Born This Way,' and music industry analysts anticipate the dueling singles from Spears and Lady Gaga to set the stage for a pop-diva war in 2011.
Spears is no stranger to pop-diva battles. Christina Aguilera once called Spears a "fake" following a controversial on-stage kiss with Madonna. "These people aren't artists, they're just performers - fake and superficial, like the entire event," Aguilera had said in the past. Both Spears and Aguilera saw their music careers blossom at the same time in the early part of the century. The market was led by Spears until Aguilera beat her out for a Grammy for Best New Artist in 2000.
Spears has previously shared with her fans some positive thoughts about Gaga, saying on Twitter "I love Lady Gaga. I think she's a really interesting artist." This comment may have indicated a change of heart by Spears, who was reported to be concerned about what appeared to be a direct copy of Spears' persona by Lady Gaga used in the video for 'Love Game'. Any speculation of a brewing hostility between the divas was silenced when producer Rodney Jerkins confirmed that Spears was singing on a leaked recording for 'Telephone', which also features Beyoncé.
Though there appears to be no strained relationship between the two Britney Spears will make it a mission to become the leading pop star again in 2011. In order to do so she will have to get by Lady Gaga, who made headlines recently by being named Billboard's 1,000th Hot 100 No. 1 with 'Born This Way'. "To be the 1000th no. 1 on Billboard, I would be silly not to say this is the greatest honor of my career," Lay Gaga said. It was the first time Lady Gaga debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Spears has had two singles top the chart upon debut, including 'Hold it Against Me.' Spears' '3' debuted at number one in 2009 and was the first non-American Idol singer to debut at the top of the chart since R. Kelly and Céline Dion did so with 'I'm Your Angel' in December of 1998.
Fans of both artists are anticipating the release of Lady Gaga's video for 'Born This Way' and both sets of fans will be eager to critique the videos and compare them and debate which one is better. Lady Gaga's video is set to release sometime next week.
Wherever this diva-battle leads us, it should be entertaining and a treat for fans of both artists.
