The winner of the HGTV Most Embarrassing Kitchen in America contest was just announced and proved some people have more dysfunctional kitchens than others but they can all be transformed.

When HGTV Magazine and HGTV Star Tiffany Brooks get together, the results are sure to be spectacular. The recent winners of the HGTV Most Embarrassing Kitchen in America contest were pleasantly surprised when their outdated kitchen was redesigned into a fabulously functional space.

Susan and Hansen Lee were the lucky winners of the HGTV Most Embarrassing Kitchen in America contest. Their kitchen had cabinets from the 1950s with rooster wallpaper and icky countertops. There dishwasher was dysfunctional and the overs could only open six inches before they bonked into a door frame. There was no room for a refrigerator and the family did not have a place to sit down together. This was a big deal as they have two daughters ages 4 and 7.

When the Lees purchased their home in California last year, they knew the kitchen needed an overhaul but a leaky roof took the spotlight. Susan said they at takeout most nights “with the kids at a little play table and Hansen and I at the counter.”

HGTV Star Tiffany Brooks and contractor Jeff Devlin, the host of DIY Network's “I Hate My Bath,” got together to transform the dingy kitchen. Tiffany soon discovered there was barely a spot to store cereal. Cubbies with cabinets were added after taking out the old oven. They also created a fort-like seating area for the girls with a Plexiglas-top table that opens up to store toys and supplies.

The yucky old countertop was replaced with a peninsula topped with marble. It has a fun blue base with woven barstools from Pier 1 Imports. There is a juicing station that looks like one from a spa with a mini refrigerator to store veggies and fruit. The old tile floors were replaced by hickory wood planks. There is also a lovely Kohler sink with a gooseneck faucet. Few people could resist the sleek new kitchen. Some Facebook fans also liked the old one and felt their kitchens were worse.

Clearly you have to be in it to win it and HGTV offers many opportunities to win. For example, the HGTV Urban Oasis 2013 Giveaway ends on October 18, 2013 so there is still plenty of time to enter to win. Stay tuned to find out the fantastic prize I recently won from HGTV – it proves real people really do win HGTV contests and giveaways!
