The plan for a screen adaptation of the 1990s hit television show "Baywatch" has been in the works, and this week, TwitchFilm.com reported that Paramount Pictures is pursuing a famous actor for its lead role.
The studio wants former boy band singer turned actor Justin Timberlake to become its lead lifeguard in the new film. If Timberlake accepts, he'll play the role of a former Olympic swimmer who attempts to join the famous lifeguard crew. And if the movie is anything like the television show, viewers will be treated to multiple shots of Timberlake sprinting across the sand in slow motion before diving into the ocean.
Paramount has already confirmed the involvement of producers Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters, Old School, Road Trip), Beau Flynn (Requiem for a Dream) and Tripp Vinson (Journey to the Center of the Earth) on the movie, which has no set release date as of yet.
Producers have also announced their hope to acquire the services of David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson. The two famously donned swimsuits and jumped to fame on the "Baywatch" television show, and while neither have committed to joining the movie project, both are believed to have standing offers should they decide to.
"Baywatch" hit the airwaves in 1989, and after 11 seasons and 242 episodes, the series swam into the sunset. While calling "Baywatch" a stroke of television genius may be a stretch, the unintended comedy, dramatic story lines and gorgeous beach bodies were enough to attract a somewhat cult following.
In addition to Hasselhoff and Anderson, several other notable actors and models made an appearance on the "Baywatch" beach. Carmen Electra, Nicole Eggert, David Chokachi, Yasmine Bleeth, Donna D'Errico, Traci Bingham and Brooke Burns all threw on the traditional orange swimsuits and saved lives.
Diehard fans can only hope that the show's famous theme song makes its way to the big screen. "Save Me," performed by Survivor's Jimi Jamison (think Eye of the Tiger), was the intro music played when the series moved to syndication. View the video below if you need a refresher.
