Flavor Flav, known for his rap career with Public Enemy and his flamboyant personality on reality television, is making another foray into the restaurant business. Flav opened Flavor Flav's House of Flavor in Las Vegas this week.
The new restaurant, located in a strip mall on South Maryland Parkway about four miles away from the Las Vegas Strip, will specialize in soul food. The big attraction will be Flav's special fried chicken, which is seasoned with spices before receiving a coat of flour.
For those wondering, Flav is not a stranger to the kitchen. He attended culinary school before his rap career took off. With that experience, Flav will be an occasional cook in the restaurant and has already provided help in the kitchen during the restaurant's first open days.
From the business side, Flavor Flav also has experience running a restaurant, though he is hoping things end better this time around. He opened a Flav's Fried Chicken in Iowa last year only to see it close down after four months due to a management dispute. The failed venture has obviously not deterred Flav, who, in addition to the new Vegas restaurant, plans to open fried chicken restaurants in Detroit and Los Angeles in the near future.
In addition to the signature chicken, Flavor Flav's House of Flavor will offer a number of sides to appeal to Las Vegas residents and tourists. Another specialty will be red velvet waffles, while soul food staples macaroni and cheese, collard greens, coleslaw, and rice and gravy also figure to appear on the menu.
The restaurant is already receiving positive reviews from customers on Yelp. Through Saturday, the business had received seven reviews and held a 4.5/5 star rating. One Yelper called it "the best fried chicken period" while another deemed it "far above all the fast food places." Multiple reviewers commented on the friendliness of the staff and the accessibility of Flavor Flav, who has posed for pictures with some guests.
Fans of the former rapper will lament the lack of big clocks hanging on the walls of the restaurant. Flav is known for wearing massive clocks as necklaces. Four big clocks do appear on the restaurant's sign outside, serving as the four "o's" in Flavor Flav's House of Flavor.
Flavor Flav, 53, born William Jonathan Drayton Jr., joined Public Enemy in 1982. The group burst on the music scene with its controversial lyrics and remained prominent through the mid 1990s. Flavor Flav reentered the entertainment industry with three reality television shows on VH1.
