Taco Bell enters the breakfast game, releases new menu

Taco Bell fancies itself as a provider of the "fourth meal." Now, the fast food giant is ready to give customers their first meal.

Taco Bell announced Thursday that it will begin serving breakfast items in select states. The 11 new items will be available to residents in 750 stores across 10 western states.

The items include egg burritos filled with steak, bacon or sausage, as well as hash browns. To spruce up the company's menu, Taco Bell has partnered with Johnsonville, Cinnabon and Seattle's Best. One new item is the Johnsonville sausage and egg wrap. Cinnabon will help produce Cinnabon delights, while Seattle's Best will provide coffee for the restaurant.

"For those looking for more than a muffin, we feel they’ve met their morning match," said Brian Niccol, Taco Bell's chief marketing and innovation officer, in a press release.

As would be expected at the fast food level, the prices of the food are relatively low and will range from $0.99 to $2.79, the cost for a grande skillet burrito, which features egg, meat, cheese, hash browns, tomato and onion.

Taco Bell joins a long line of other fast food restaurants that have thrown their hats into the breakfast ring. McDonald's has been a stalwart in the breakfast game, while Subway, Burger King, Wendy's and Jack in the Box have all made concerted efforts to provide breakfast items to their consumers in recent years.

As a result of the new menu, Taco Bell will be opening its doors earlier, but it still won't rival the start times of some other restaurants. Taco Bell plans to open doors at either 8 or 9 a.m. and stop serving the breakfast items at 11 a.m.

The list of states in which Taco Bell has begun serving its first meal are Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Utah, New Mexico, Nevada and Colorado. Some stores in Texas, Oklahoma and Ohio will also feature the food. There are plans to expand breakfast coverage to the east coast in 2013, and the company also plans to offer breakfast items at night toward the end of 2012.
