In 2012, The Bucks County Playhouse Conservancy, a public/private partnership acquired the distressed property from a previous foreclosure and undertook significant restorations both physically & theatrically. By all accounts, the Playhouse has reclaimed its rightful place of honor in keeping up & expanding upon the traditions of live theater.
The list of household name performers & directors at this theater reads like a true life Who’s Who of Stage & Screen: Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy, Helen Hayes, Grace Kelly, Robert Redford, Dick Van Dyke, Mike Nichols, Tyne Daly, Alan Alda, Bernadette Peters, Liza Minelli, Rob Reiner, Linda Eder, Andrea McArdle & Bebe Neuwirth are just a sampling. One such performer, Angela Lansbury, who appeared in 1952’s Affairs of State was honored as the inaugural inductee to the Playhouse’s Hall of Fame in Oct of ’13.
Local stories have it that one of Ms. Lansbury’s twin brothers owned a unique residential property just outside of the town and that this is where she stayed while in rehearsal & performing at the Bucks County Playhouse. This unique little connection was stumbled upon as I acquired the listing to this circa 1865 brick manor house in Solebury Township, PA. New Hope is full of little stories such as this, perhaps your story will be added to the list, as you make your mark on history here.
