Gustav is now heading towards the island of Hispaniola, shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and is expected to make landfall later today.
Analysts say it could cause enormous problems in Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the world, as it has barely recovered from the damage caused by tropical storm Fay, which hit last week and killed at least 50 people.
Experts say most of the damage will not be caused by the fierce winds but by flooding caused by excessive rainfall. Residents of the Dominican Republic are also fearfully awaiting the arrival of hurricane Gustav, the seventh storm in the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season.
