It’s interesting to see such a large investment being made, and this kind of decision is a dilemma for Government. If the Government was to retrench and avoid making such investments that could worsen unemployment and prolong the recession, as well as lose valuable UK skills. This is also necessary because of the current bank lending issues. I hope this investment will pay off.
BBC Business – “The government is to give plane manufacturer Airbus up to £340m in loans for new projects, Business Secretary Lord Mandelson has said. £60m was also loaned to GKN in 2008.”
“Business Secretary Lord Mandelson made the announcement on a visit to the Filton, Bristol, plant of Airbus UK which will be making the wings for the new plane.” Filton is in north Bristol, UK.
Yahoo News – “Business Secretary Lord Mandelson made the announcement on a visit to the Filton, Bristol, plant of Airbus UK which will be making the wings for the new plane.”
“The Government assistance will create and sustain more than 1,200 jobs at Filton and at Airbus UK's Broughton plant in north Wales.”
Such research is undertaken in partnership between manufacturers and universities, and is international with many suppliers and partnerships involved. The UK part of this is research and production of the wingbox (wing structure/skeleton) parts – spars, skin, ribs, and stringers. These can be represented in software as a ‘product data structure’, which represents all the manufacture of the parts, the materials used, resources needed etc, so the design and manufacture can be planned.
