Ford and Boeing have announced hundreds of job losses in Victoria over the past few days.
But Mr Tanner has told Channel Ten that is not representative of the overall employment situation in Australia.
"The overall employment figures are still very robust, we anticipate that they will continue to be in good shape," he said.
"It's important to note that bad news always sells well in the media.
"But when companies are actually adding staff, when employment's increasing in particular firms, you never see that, or rarely see that, in the media.
"That creates a very unbalanced picture of what's actually happening."
