The Cleveland Browns cornerback made one teenager's dreams come true last week when he accepted a Twitter invitation and joined Joyce Grendel at her senior prom.
Grendel, an 18-year-old student at Independence High School in Ohio, found herself without a date for the prom when her original partner dropped out just days before the dance. Taking a shot in the dark, Grendel, a huge Haden fan who attended many of his fan club events, tweeted an invitation to the Browns star defensive back.
To her surprise, Haden happily accepted the invitation, saying that he had never been to his own senior prom and would love to accompany Grendel.
"Cant wait until may 11th! I will be taking one of my biggest fans @joycee_emily 2 her highschool prom!" Haden tweeted.
Sure enough on Friday night, Haden pulled up to Grendel's home in his Lamborghini -- Haden is entering the third season of a 5-year, $50 million contract he signed as a rookie out of the University of Florida. Despite his fame, Haden expressed his own nervousness as he posed for pictures with Grendel and her friends.
Grendel's excitement may have only been matched by her parents, who spoke glowingly about the class shown by Haden and what a great man he was for his supreme act of kindness.
"You know, a lot of times they won't give you the time of day," Carrie Grendel, Joyce's mother, told WEWS in Cleveland. "I think that's sad, because where would they be without the fans? For Joe to take the time to talk to them and respond back, that was huge."
Clearly, Grendel, as evidenced by her Twitter feed, enjoyed the night.
"Me and @Laceyy23 had the time of our lives on Friday with @joehaden23 ! We can't stop talking about it! Was it a dream? #cloudnine," she tweeted Sunday.
Haden may have shown himself to be an All-Star human being, but the cornerback has already proven to be one of the NFL's bright young stars on the field. As a rookie in 2010, Haden finished fifth in the NFL with six interceptions. Last season, he was shut out of the interception category but ended the year with 53 tackles and 19 passes defensed, good for sixth in the NFL.
