Joan Rivers and her crew on E!’s Fashion Police reviewed the Emmy Awards red carpet fashions and had plenty to say as usual.
In advance of the 2011 Emmy Awards, Joan and the Fashion Police (Giuliana Rancic, Kelly Osbourne and stylist George George Kotsiopoulos) doled out advice to perennial candidates for the worst dressed at awards show. Read: Joan Rivers gives advice to Emmy nominees
Christina Hendricks, Jane Lynch, Tina Fey and Sofia Vergara got schooled on how to avoid their previous mistakes. Only Hendricks of AMC’s “Mad Men” cast didn’t get the message. She was named this year’s worst dressed woman on the red carpet.
Christina made some progress but not enough for Ms. Rivers who said that Hendricks’ 2010 Emmy Awards look proved that: “…bigger girls can look like s—t too.” This year’s gown featured a front slit that ended at mid-thigh, exposing “fat knees” as Joan called them. It was a big enough no-no to earn her the crown.
Of the others who got Rivers’ pre-Emmy advice, Tina Fey got a passing grade while Jane Lynch and Sofia Vergara were in the running for the best dressed of the night. Both Lynch and Vergara had cleaned up their major fashion mistakes to the point where Joan Rivers took credit for the complete turnaround.
Flaming Red Was The Popular Color Of The Night
Even E! red carpet co-host Giuliana Rancic was draped in it and noted that she was upstaged by many others who included:
Joan and her police differed on the gown the actress wore. While Joan believed she hadn’t worn the correct undergarments to keep her bulges in place, George Kotsiopoulos defended Winslet’s choice. He said that on the runway, the dress was worn by a stick-figure model. Winslet gave it shape he said. Guiliana commented that it was a boring look.
The va-va-voom actress wore a Vera Wang design and got kudos all around for the gown’s ability to hug her hour glass figure while remaining tasteful. The one sour note from the Fashion Police was Vergara’s choice of jewelry. Giuliana said that with a different choice of earrings, Vergara would have been a best dressed nominee. Joan wickedly said that at least Vergara’s breasts weren’t the most dangling part of her outfit this time. Ouch!
Sporting a Marchesa gown that featured a very low back and cap sleeves that looked a bit like shoulder pads, Michele did not escape the vicious words of Rivers. She can’t abide the “Glee” actress, saying that her ego is so big that Michele is getting a reputation as a pain in the rear.
For that reason she chose to recuse herself from having an opinion about her fashion choice. Kotsiopoulos thought the shoulder pad-look was too big for the petite actress. Both Osbourne and Rancic picked on her choice of an ordinary hair style that did not flatter her with the padded shoulder cap sleeves of the dress.
Best Dressed Nominees
Armani Prive’ won raves from the panel, but Joan had one negative word to share. Calling the overall look “stunning” Rivers took exception to the very structured bodice of the gown that looked a bit like a body brace worn after back surgery. George and Kelly’s two tiny complaints were the gown’s length that obscured her shoes and a hair style that looked, according to them, more messy than necessary.
The “Game of Thrones” actress sported one of the evening’s few black gowns and got a unequivocal “She looks amazing,” from the critical Joan Rivers. “It was like an Audrey Hepburn look,” Rivers said calling attention to Headley’s hair style and choice of jewelry. Kelly Osbourne exclaimed, “It took my breath away.”
Usually a fashion victim in the minds of Joan and her police, Wiig outdid herself this year. Rivers called it “amazing” and loved the plunging neckline so much that she said, “…the Chilean miners were getting flashbacks, it went so deep.” George K also loved the neckline and the subtle color that in a small way mimicked her hair coloring. Kelly and Giuliana thought it was the best that Wiig every looked on a red carpet.
Draped in flaming red from Donna Karan’s 2012 fashion line, the panel thought the “Vampire Diaries” actress was perfection from head to toe. “Knocked my socks off,” said Joan Rivers. ” George K said, “She nailed it in this dress.” Rancic was jealous of Dobrev looking better than her in red and exclaimed that she was “Stunning.”
Worst Dressed Nominees
Despite Christina Hendricks taking the crown there were plenty of others who had their chances.
Not only did her blue gown come with an awkward belt, the Fashion Police savaged the racer bathing suit-style neck as too casual for the red carpet and her lack of any noticeable hair style. Kotsiopoulos said it appeared that Holmes pulled her hair back to apply her makeup and forgot to take her hair down.
Dressed in Emilio Pucci, the Fashion Police had one big criticism of her choice. It was see-through and it appeared that the actress hadn’t been warned about the effect of the glaring television lights, which made the outfit more of a harem dress than a gown. It was also panned as too casual for a red carpet.
Pretty in pink was not the opinion of the panel, particularly Ms Rivers that called the look, “Too cutesy…little pink dress, little pink earrings.” before lambasting Deschanel by saying, “Zoe, Suri Cruise just called and wants her dress back.” Kelly O said the bodice didn’t fit properly and “…squeezed her bosom into a square-like configuration.”
When all was said and done, Joan crowned Lena Headley as the 2011 Emmy Awards best dressed woman, in a tight race over Nina Dobrev. E!’s Fashion Police repeats throughout the week for your viewing pleasure.
